About this variation
Black answers 2. Nc3 with 2...Nc6, mirroring White's development.
The Max Lange Defense is 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nc6. Black mirrors White's development, keeping the position symmetrical and flexible. White can choose from several set-ups, including 3. Bc4, 3. g3 and 3. f4, the Vienna Gambit idea with the knight on c6.
After 3. Bc4, Black often plays 3...Nf6 or 3...Bc5, leading to positions similar to the Italian Game. After 3. g3, White aims for a fianchetto and slow maneuvering play. After 3. f4, the game becomes sharper, with ideas similar to the King's Gambit.
Black's typical ideas include ...Nf6, ...Bc5 and ...d6, developing quickly and keeping the e5 pawn. Black can also play ...g6 and ...Bg7 against White's fianchetto set-ups, or ...d5 to open the center.
White's plans depend on the chosen set-up. With Bc4, White aims for quick development and pressure on f7. With g3, White plays for a slow, positional game. With f4, White aims for an attack on the kingside.
The Max Lange Defense suits Black players who like flexible, solid positions. White players should learn the main set-ups and choose the one that suits their style.
A practical tip for both sides is to learn the typical plans in each set-up rather than memorizing long lines. The same ideas, such as the f4 push and the ...d5 break, appear in many open games.
One concrete line worth knowing is 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. Qg4, a sharp try where White attacks g7 at once. Black's best answers are 4...Kf8 and 4...g6. The natural 4...Qf6? runs into 5. Nd5! Qxf2+ 6. Kd1, when White threatens Qxg7 and Nxc7+ and the black queen is in danger. Against 3. f4, Black often plays 3...exf4 4. Nf3 g5, reaching a King's Gambit Accepted with the knights already on c3 and c6. Knowing these few lines is enough to avoid the early traps and reach a normal middlegame. From there, the usual Vienna plans take over.
It is one of the main lines of the Vienna Game.
