Black's typical ideas include quick development with ...Bc5 or ...Bb4, central play with ...d5, and pressure on e4. Black aims to keep the balance by challenging White's center at the right moment.
White's plans depend on the chosen set-up. With f4, White aims for a kingside attack. With Bc4, White aims for quick development and pressure on f7. With g3, White plays for a slow, positional game.
The Falkbeer Variation suits Black players who want an active, principled reply to the Vienna. White players should learn the main set-ups and choose the one that suits their style.
Studying model games is the best way to learn the typical plans. The Vienna rewards an understanding of central control and quick development for both sides.
A useful concrete line is 3. Bc4 Nc6 4. d3 Bb4, a quiet move order that keeps the position balanced and avoids the sharpest lines. Against 3. g3, Black often plays 3...d5 4. exd5 Nxd5 5. Bg2 Nxc3 6. bxc3, giving White the half-open b-file and a strong bishop on g2, while Black gets easy development with ...Bd6 or ...Bc5. It is one of the main lines of the Vienna Game.
