About this variation
Black answers 3. Nxe5 with 3...Nc6, giving up a pawn for quick development and traps. It is popular online but unsound with best play.
The Stafford Gambit is 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 Nc6. Black gives up the e5 pawn for quick development, and after 4. Nxc6 dxc6, Black has open lines for the bishops and queen. The gambit became very popular online because it is full of traps, and many club players fall into them. Objectively the gambit is unsound: with calm play White keeps the extra pawn and a clear advantage.
Black's main ideas are ...Bc5 aiming at f2, ...Ng4 to attack f2 and h2, and ...h5 to support the knight and open the h-file. Black often aims for a quick attack on White's king, especially if White castles short too early. Many of the traps involve quick checkmates on f2 or g3.
White's safest approach is to play 5. d3 and develop calmly, avoiding the traps, or 5. Nc3 with careful play. White should not castle too early and should be careful about ...Bc5 and ...Ng4 ideas. With accurate play, White keeps the extra pawn and has a clear advantage.
Black's best chance is that White does not know the traps. Against a well-prepared opponent, the gambit gives Black too little for the pawn, so it is mainly a practical weapon for fast games.
Typical mistakes for White include 5. e5, which drives the knight to a good square, and early Bg5 or Bc4 moves, or castling short too soon, which leave f2 weak. Learning a few key traps and the simple antidote is enough for White to handle the gambit.
The Stafford Gambit suits Black players who like quick attacks and are willing to take risks in fast games. White players should prepare the main antidote with d3 and Nc3, since the gambit appears often online.
After 5. d3 Bc5 6. Be2, Black's attack often runs out of steam.
It is one of the main lines of the Petrov's Defense.
