About this variation

White plays 3. d4, opening the center at once instead of taking on e5. It leads to more open positions.

The Modern Attack is 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. d4. White opens the center straight away instead of taking the e5 pawn, leading to more open positions than the Classical Attack. Black's main replies are 3...Nxe4, counterattacking at once, and 3...exd4, opening the e-file.

After 3...Nxe4 4. Bd3 d5 5. Nxe5, White has active pieces and Black's knight is well placed on e4. Both sides develop quickly, and the game often reaches symmetrical positions where small differences in piece activity matter. After 3...exd4 4. e5 Ne4 5. Qxd4 d5, the game becomes more open and tactical.

White's plans include quick development with Bd3, O-O and Re1, pressure on the e-file, and play against the knight on e4 with c4 or Nc3. White aims for a lead in development and a small initiative.

Black's ideas include ...d5 to support the knight, ...Nc6 and ...Bd6 for quick development, and ...O-O. Black aims to reach a balanced position where the active pieces compensate for White's slight space advantage.

A common mistake for Black is to grab material while falling behind in development, since the open lines can favor White. A common mistake for White is to overextend in the center without enough support. Both sides do best by focusing on quick, harmonious development.

The Modern Attack suits White players who like open positions and want to avoid the long theory of the Classical Attack. Black players should know the main lines with 3...Nxe4 and 3...exd4, since both are common at club level.

One line to know is 3...Nxe4 4. Bd3 d5 5. Nxe5 Nd7 6. Nxd7 Bxd7 7. O-O Bd6, a solid set-up where Black keeps the knight on e4 and completes development. White usually aims for c4 to challenge the d5 pawn.

It is one of the main lines of the Petrov's Defense.
