About this variation
Black declines with 2...Bc5, stopping White from castling short for a while.
The Classical Variation of the King's Gambit Declined is 1. e4 e5 2. f4 Bc5. Black declines the pawn and develops the bishop to c5, where it controls the g1 square and stops White from castling short for a while. If White takes on e5 too early, Black has ...Qh4+ ideas, so White must be careful.
White's main replies are 3. Nf3, preparing c3 and d4 to drive away the bishop, and 3. Nc3, developing quickly. In both cases, White aims to gain the center and castle once the bishop on c5 has been dealt with.
Black's typical set-up includes ...d6, ...Nf6 and ...Nc6, developing quickly and keeping the e5 pawn. Black can also play ...exf4 later, after White's pieces are committed, or keep the tension and aim for ...Bg4 to pin the knight.
The Classical Variation leads to sound, positional play compared with the sharp lines of the King's Gambit Accepted. Black gets easy development and keeps the bishop on its strong diagonal, while White aims for central control and a slow kingside attack.
This line suits Black players who want a safe way to meet the King's Gambit without learning long forced lines. White players should know the main plans with c3 and d4, which give White the best chances for an advantage.
A typical trap to watch for is the early fxe5, which can allow ...Qh4+ with a strong attack for Black. White players should prepare one solid set-up and avoid opening the position before the king is safe.
After 3. Nf3 d6 4. c3, White threatens d4 to gain the center with tempo on the bishop, so Black often replies 4...Nf6 or 4...Bg4. The resulting positions are rich but not forced, and they reward a good understanding of central pawn breaks and king safety.
It is one of the main lines of the King's Gambit.
