About this variation

White plays Qb3 to put pressure on d5, often winning the c4-pawn back with the queen. It leads to rich middlegames.

The Russian Variation is 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. Nf3 Bg7 5. Qb3. White hits the d5 pawn with the queen and the c4 pawn, and after 5...dxc4 6. Qxc4 O-O 7. e4, White has a big center with the queen actively placed. Black aims to use the time White's queen spends moving to attack the center.

Black's main systems include the Hungarian line with 7...a6, preparing ...b5 to gain time on the queen, the Smyslov line with 7...Bg4, pinning the knight and pressuring d4, and the Prins line with 7...Na6, preparing ...c5. Each approach aims to undermine White's center with pieces and pawns.

White's plans focus on keeping the center and using the extra space. Typical moves include Be2, O-O, Rd1 and Be3, with the d5 push gaining space when possible. White's queen on c4 can also become a target, so White often moves it to b3 or d3 at the right moment.

Black's typical breaks include ...c5 and ...e5, opening the position for the bishop on g7. Black often plays ...Nfd7 or ...Nc6 to pressure d4, and in some lines ...b5 drives the queen away with tempo. If Black's counterplay succeeds, White's center can become a weakness.

The Russian Variation is a good choice for White players who want a principled line with a big center and clear plans. Black players need to choose one of the main systems and study its typical plans, since natural moves can easily leave Black passive against White's space advantage.

Because the Russian Variation is heavily analyzed, players on both sides often choose one main system and learn its key moves and ideas, then add others over time. Understanding the common plans, such as the d5 push and Black's queenside pressure, matters more than memorizing every line.

It is one of the main lines of the Grünfeld Defense.
