About this variation

Black keeps the pawn on d5 and develops with ...Be7 and ...O-O, aiming for a solid but slightly passive position.

The Closed Catalan arises when Black keeps the pawn on d5 instead of capturing on c4, typically with 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. g3 d5 4. Bg2 Be7 5. Nf3 O-O 6. O-O followed by ...c6 and ...Nbd7. Black builds a solid pawn chain on c6, d5 and e6, similar to the Queen's Gambit Declined, and aims to free the position later.

White's main plans are Qc2, Nbd2 or Nc3, b3 and Bb2, keeping a flexible center and preparing e4 to open the position for the pieces. White's bishop on g2 presses against d5 and the long diagonal, and the e4 break is the main way for White to increase the pressure.

Black's main problem is the light-squared bishop on c8, which is blocked by the pawns on e6 and d5. Black usually tries to free it with ...b6 and ...Bb7, or with the ...e5 break after ...Qc7 and ...Re8. Another plan is ...dxc4 at a good moment followed by ...c5, opening the position.

The Closed Catalan is a slow, maneuvering opening. Both sides need patience and a good understanding of pawn structures, since few lines are forced. White often aims for a small but lasting edge, while Black aims to complete development and equalize without allowing White's pieces to dominate.

This variation suits Black players who like very solid positions and are comfortable defending. It also suits White players who enjoy long strategic games, where the extra space and the strong bishop on g2 can be used to press for many moves.

A practical tip for Black is to learn one clear freeing plan, such as ...b6 and ...Bb7 with ...c5 later, and stick to it. For White, learning when to play e4 and how to meet ...e5 is the most important part of studying the Closed Catalan.

It is one of the main lines of the Catalan Opening.
