About this variation
After 3. Nc3 dxe4 4. Nxe4, Black develops the bishop with 4...Bf5. It is the traditional main line and gives Black a very solid position.
The Classical Variation comes from 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Bf5. Black gives up the center for a moment in order to develop the light-squared bishop outside the pawn chain, then plays ...e6, ...Nd7, ...Ngf6 and ...Be7 or ...Bd6. The result is one of the most solid positions available to Black against 1. e4.
The main line runs 5. Ng3 Bg6 6. h4 h6 7. Nf3 Nd7 8. h5 Bh7 9. Bd3 Bxd3 10. Qxd3. White uses the h-pawn to gain space and fix Black's kingside, then castles queenside and tries to make use of the extra space. Black castles queenside as well, or keeps the king in the center, and aims for ...c5 or ...e5 to free the position. Many games reach an endgame where White's space and Black's solidity balance out.
The typical middlegame themes are a slight space edge for White on the kingside, a well-protected Black king, and few weaknesses on either side. White often plays Bf4 or Bd2, Ne5 and a queenside castle. Black looks for exchanges, the ...c5 break and a good knight on f6 or d5. Accurate defense is needed, but once Black has completed development there is very little for White to attack.
The Classical suits patient players who are happy to defend a small disadvantage and win slowly. It has been the main line of the Caro-Kann for decades, played by world champions such as Botvinnik, Petrosian and Karpov.
The order of Black's moves matters in the opening phase. Playing ...Nd7 before ...Ngf6 avoids an early Ne5 that could be annoying, and keeping the bishop on h7 after h5 lets it watch the b1-h7 diagonal. Small details like these are what make the Classical so reliable once they are learned.
It is one of the main lines of the Caro-Kann Defense.
