About this variation

After 1...d5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. e3, Black plays 3...c5, building a classical center. It is a solid, popular set-up for Black.

The Lasker Variation is 1. f4 d5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. e3 c5. Black builds a classical center with pawns on c5 and d5, similar to a reversed Dutch with Black playing a Queen's Gambit set-up. The extra central control gives Black a comfortable game and a choice of plans.

White's typical set-up is b3, Bb2, Be2 or Bb5, and O-O, controlling e5 and preparing kingside play. White can also play Bb5+ in some lines to trade off Black's light-squared bishop or disrupt Black's development.

Black's main ideas include ...Nc6, ...g6 and ...Bg7, or ...e6 and ...Be7, developing quickly and preparing ...d4 to gain space. Black also has ...Bg4 to pin and trade the f3 knight, which reduces White's control of e5.

White's plans include a kingside attack with Ne5, Qe1-h4 and g4, and central play with d3 and e4. White must be careful not to let Black's central advantage grow too strong.

The Lasker Variation suits Black players who like classical structures and solid development. White players should know how to handle Black's central space, since it is one of the most common replies to the Bird.

A practical tip is to learn the main plans for both sides rather than long lines. The Bird is less theoretical than most openings, so understanding typical structures is more useful than memorizing moves.

A typical continuation is 4. b3 Nc6 5. Bb2 Bg4, when Black pins the knight that controls e5. White often answers with Be2 and O-O, keeping the position flexible, and the game becomes a slow fight for the center. Black can also aim for ...e6, ...Be7 and ...d4 to gain more space, after which White's play usually shifts to the kingside with Ne5 and Qe1. Both sides should remember that small timing differences, such as when White plays d3 or Black plays ...d4, often decide which side's plan works.

It is one of the main lines of the Bird Opening.
