About this variation
White plays c4, d4, e5 and f4, building the largest possible center. It is the most ambitious and the most double-edged line.
The Four Pawns Attack is 1. e4 Nf6 2. e5 Nd5 3. d4 d6 4. c4 Nb6 5. f4. White puts four pawns side by side on c4, d4, e5 and f4, taking as much space as possible. It is the line that tests the Alekhine's idea most directly: if the center holds, Black is cramped, and if it breaks, White's pawns become targets.
The main line goes 5...dxe5 6. fxe5 Nc6 7. Be3 Bf5 8. Nc3 e6 9. Nf3. Black develops quickly and puts pressure on d4 and e5 with pieces, while White needs several moves to support the center. The position is sharp, and both sides must know the key ideas well.
Black's main ideas are to attack d4 with ...Nc6, ...Bf5 or ...Bg4, ...e6 and ...Qd7, then castle long or short depending on where White's pieces are. The break ...f6 or ...c5 at the right moment can destroy White's center, and Black's pieces can then become very active.
White's plans include Be2, O-O and d5 to gain more space and push Black's pieces back, and a kingside attack based on the e5 pawn and the open f-file. White must be careful not to let the center become a set of weak pawns with few defenders.
The Four Pawns Attack is risky for both sides. Many Alekhine players welcome it because White commits so much, while many White players choose it because Black has little room if the center holds. Knowing the main line and the typical breaks is essential.
This line suits White players who like big centers and sharp positions and are willing to study concrete lines. Black players should prepare one main line in detail, since a few slow moves can leave Black without space or counterplay.
It is one of the main lines of the Alekhine Defense.
